SANDCASTLES
WAYFINDER
Brook Jordan first appeared in Book One, Against the Current, where he worked the front desk alongside Diego Marsden and Patrick Ashcroft at the Strand Hotel. He played a larger part in King Tides, where he was cheating on his girlfriend, accepting unreciprocated blowjobs from Patrick, and generally living up to the image many readers formed of him —a player, a cheater, a beautiful mess.
A lot of you didn’t like Brook. Some of you outright hated him. You saw a man using Patrick, chasing his own pleasure, and never looking deeper. You weren’t wrong — but you weren’t completely right either.
Brook, in truth, was a victim of his own reflection. Being beautiful meant being wanted — constantly, endlessly, by men and women alike — and it was easier to let himself be wanted than to risk being truly known. No one asked who he was beyond the pretty face and easy charm. And for a long time, Brook didn’t ask himself either.
Then Josh Martin walked into The Strand, and something shifted. Josh lived a life not so different: loved for his looks, chased for his surface, but longing for something quieter, deeper, and real. Between them, it started with lust, but there was always something more — something neither of them dared to name at first. They lived in different cities, followed different currents, but were drawn together by something undeniable.
From the beginning, I understood Brook — maybe more than most. I knew what it felt like to be looked at but not really seen. I always knew I had to tell his story. To show you what lay behind the easy smile and casual hookups: a man with a past that bruised him, and a heart that, despite it all, was still capable of astonishing tenderness.
This was closer to the story I first imagined telling in Against the Current, where Diego and Logan might have explored something raw and unexpected. But sometimes, characters have their own ideas — and as an author, you learn to listen.
In this book, Brook finally gets to be more than the sum of his mistakes. This is the story of what love can heal — and what it can never completely erase. A story about choosing each other, again and again, even after the tides pull you apart.
And if by the end you still don’t love Brook… I’m coming to your fucking house!
But I hope, if nothing else, you’ll see him. And maybe you’ll see what I did writing this: that sometimes, life doesn’t go the way you planned — sometimes it goes better. Because love doesn’t just change people; sometimes, it surprises them with a family they never even knew they needed.

Of all the novels I’ve written to date, the story you’re about to read most closely mirrors my own life journey. Jevan, Jenna, Dylan, Kacey, and Ethan are fictional characters — but I’ve had, or still have, my own versions of each of them.
This isn’t an autobiography, nor is it a perfect parallel to my life. It’s fiction. But the arcs ring true, especially Kellen’s — his relationships, personality, and path in life most closely reflect my own.
This book is also the most loosely connected to The Strand Hotel series. Kellen and Kacey didn’t work there; they simply met there — by chance. Still, the hotel holds special meaning for them. It’s where everything began, and in a way, where they fell in love.
It was an incredibly fun book to write, largely because I loved every single character. You’ll even spot a few familiar faces: Luna Cho, Patrick Ashcroft, and Jacob Wright all make appearances — with Luna playing a particularly special role.
Kacey stands in for my real-life husband of nearly thirty years. Jenna for my ex-wife and good friend. Jevan for my first love — and the complicated, beautiful mess that came with it. The prologue of this book is drawn almost directly from my life.
There’s heartbreak here, yes — but also tenderness, humor, and warmth. And if that’s not enough, there’s plenty of spice to keep things lively. Don’t pretend you don’t enjoy that — we all do, and that’s a good thing.
So go ahead, jump in. I think you’ll fall for these characters as deeply as I did. When you finish, I can promise you’ll feel happy — and you’ll miss them. But don’t worry. They’re still there. Still in love. Still moving forward.
